On July 24, at 12:27 pm, East Umatilla County Rural Fire Protection District responded to a stubble field fire on Gerking Flat Road. Upon arrival, the local farmers had done most of the work of putting the fire out with a disc and water trucks. East Umatilla County RFPD was there to take care of the hot spots and mopping up. The fire was approximately a half an acre.
Responding units were 2 brush trucks, Tender 61 and Chief Baty for East Umatilla County RFPD, Athena Volunteer Fire Department brought an engine and 5 firefighters, for structure protection and Umatilla County Sheriff's Office. Pendleton Fire and Tribal Fire were called, but were cancelled after Chief Baty arrived on scene and did a size up of the situation.
"The farmers did an amazing job of putting the fire out with a disc and water trucks, they did all the hard work," Chief Baty said.
No one was injured and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
